Introduction and Mandate
The goal of this document is to present the user requirements associated with the development of the UVic Messenger system project. The proposed system is to provide the UVic campus community, students and faculty, with a messenger service that will also display daily schedules and notify users of incoming Webmail, among other things. Other features that will be offered by the system, such as automatic contact list generation and ftp capabilities, are discussed throughout this document. Such a system will provide students with a readily available support system and peer groups. It will increase student productivity as well as student well being. The system will also provide faculty with another avenue of discourse with which to enhance the teaching environment.
To achieve our goals as user requirement gatherers for the project we have followed three techniques of gathering. Over the dates of March 4 to March 7, 2005, we have conducted four interviews, two with grad students two with undergrads, two workshops, all undergrads, and one brainstorming session with team project members only. The students involved consisted of a political science major, history major, french major and a number of computer science and software engineering majors. We also had one instructor present at the brain storming session. This diverse group of students and instructors gave us a breadth of knowledge to harvest our ideas from.
In section two of this document we list the major stakeholders in the project, their main goals, and two different user profiles. Section three contains our list of requirements for the project using the Volere template as our guide. The following two sections, four and five, contain scenarios and Hierarchical task analyses of the listed requirements, respectively. In the final section, you will find a detailed breakdown of the work done by each team member, because although there is no I in team, there is an I in I want the mark that I deserve, and not the one my team earned.
