This book describes traces the historical evolution of computers and
"intelligent" machines starting with the 17-th century insights of
Thomas Hobbes. It also speculates about the future and sees the Web as
a step toward the creation of a "globally networked, sentient being"
that combines human and machine intelligences.
A great overview of the fascinating early history of computers.
