I am enjoying things so far, but I am having trouble with the website. It would be nice if certain information was presented in a more accesible fashion. For example, the assignment submission link was imbedded in the previous lecture and not on the assignment page where I might expect it to be.(an even better place would have been on the first page) Also, Office hours. I can't find them anywhere! I still have been unable to find the sml link you were talking about as well. So, just a bit more clearer on the web page. :) I appreciate your enthusiasm(sp?) for the subject. It is refreshing to see an instructor who likes what he teaches! I am enjoying the class so far. The only thing that is bothering me is what you said about exams! you said they would be "SUPER HARD"!!! I am not afraid of hard exams at all. the only thing that I know is neither very easy exams nor very hard ones can differentiate between good students and average ones. For example in the chemistry department one teacher made one exam so hard that all the students failed the exam. so he scaled them up and all passed it !!!!
If you just said it so that we study better, I understand you but if you want to make them very hard I think it is better to think about it more.

January 18th, 2004 19:09:13 From George: In regards to the "SUPER HARD" midterm if I used these words it was mainly to motivate you to start working on the suggested exercises and experimenting with SML. Some of the questions in the midterm will be easy and some harder. Basically my goal is someone who has attended all the lectures and worked on the suggested exercises and assignments should be able to answer 75-85% of the midterm questions without any problem and have a good chance of answering the rest. There will be a review session and possibly a sample midterm but the main thing is to keep working regularly for each lecture. ML doesn't allow the use of = for testing equality
on reals as it is not well defined because of precision problems.
I would prefer if people use the webboard for questions like this

I have been killing myself to figure out how to run the SML on my xp or the linux. for linux, I still can not get sml running under the emacs
but for xp, I have found a good freeware that named "MLEdit" it's awesome!!
check it out yourself, just install the sml and mledit! u will on u way
