Postions in the Computer Science Theory Group at the University of Victoria

The Theory Group of the Computer Science department in the University of Victoria, BC, Canada is looking for one or more talented students for the Masters or PhD degree, to begin in September 2018, or possibly May 2018. The Theory Group includes Bruce Kapron, Valerie King, Wendy Myrvold, Frank Ruskey, Venkatesh Srinivasan, Ulrike Stege and Sue Whitesides. We are looking for students with strong mathematical ability and experience in the theory of computing. The group's interests include combinatorial algorithms, cryptography, complexity, data structures, distributed computing, graph algorithms, logic, parameterized complexity, and randomization.

We also have an opening for one or more postdoctoral fellows, with a 2018 start date. Such a position would be for one year, possibly extendable to two. We will give preference to those interested in working across more than one area. Postdoctoral fellows should normally have a record of publication in internationally recognized conferences or journals in theoretical computer science.

Applicants for student positions are requested to submit a CV, three references with email contacts, transcripts which demonstrate mathematical ability and relevant coursework, and a statement of research interests. PhD and postdoctoral applicants should in addition submit evidence of research, such as papers which have appeared in internationally recognized venues. Please send these materials by November 13, 2017 to cstheory@uvic.ca.

Finally, we invite inquiries regarding short-term research visits for visitors at all levels, including students and postdoctoral fellows.

Please contact Valerie King val@uvic.ca or Bruce Kapron bmkapron@uvic.ca if you have questions.
